Training session no. 2 – Sample collection and physicochemical analysis on site
2020-04-28 @ 19:00 - 20:00 EEST
In this training session 2 topics were presented, namely:
1) Training procedure of volunteers regarding the processing of water, sediment and soil samples collected for microbiology analysis – In this training session, the volunteer students were informed about the processing of water, soil and sediment samples, in the microbiology laboratory. The main methods for isolation and purification of microbial colonies were presented to the volunteer students.
2) Biological and enzymatic remediation of waters and soils – Environmental pollution by heavy metals which are released into the environment through various anthropocentric activities such as mining, energy and fuel production, electroplating, wastewater sludge treatment, and agriculture is one of the world’s major environmental problem. Biological remediation, a process defined as the use of microorganisms, plants, or enzymes to detoxify or remove organic and inorganic xenobiotic compounds from the environment is a remediation option that offers green technology solutions to the problem of environmental degradation. In this presentation, the steps of bioremediation of water and soil polluted with heavy metals are described, using genetically modified microorganisms and microorganisms producing enzyme-dependent of metals. The technique is successfully applied in our laboratory.
